Brenda Carolyn
Barker
Oct 5, 1942 — Aug 6, 2026
Mt. Sterling
Brenda Gilvin Barker, 83, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord on August 6, 2026, at Homestead Nursing Home in Lexington, Kentucky.
Born on October 5, 1942, in Montgomery County, Kentucky, Brenda was a lifelong Kentuckian and a native of Mt. Sterling. She attended Mt. Sterling City Schools and spent much of her life in the community she loved.
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Barker; her cherished son, Timothy "Grant" Adams; her grandson, Tyler Grant Adams; her sister, Yvonne Marie Yarber; her mother, Mary Woodson Gilvin; and her aunts, Doris Tyree, Opal Foley and Lena Gilvin. She was also preceded in death by her nephew, Eric Damon Yarber.
She is survived by her nephew, Byron Keith Yarber of Lexington, Kentucky; her cousins, Karen Sue and Billy Wayne Gilvin; her great-granddaughter, Kimber Adams; and numerous other family members and friends who will forever keep her memory alive.
As a little girl, Brenda, her sister Marie and mother “Woody” Gilvin would travel to Lexington and sing on WLAP-AM radio.
Brenda worked at Jerry's Restaurant and the Midland Trail Hotel, where she was known for her friendly personality and customer service. Throughout her life, she faced significant health challenges after contracting rheumatic fever as a young child.
Nothing brought Brenda greater pride than her son, Grant Adams. She celebrated his distinguished career with the Kentucky State Police, where he served as a Trooper, Detective, and Sergeant. His courage and dedication were recognized with the agency's highest honor, the Valor of Honor Award, and he was also named a Kentucky Colonel. Brenda also deeply loved her grandson, Tyler Grant Adams, and found great joy in her great-granddaughter, Kimber Adams.
Family was always at the center of Brenda's life. She loved cooking, and family gatherings were often made sweeter by her famous Japanese Fruit Pie and homemade fruit cobblers. She also appreciated one of life's simple pleasures—a hot, strong cup of coffee shared with family and friends.
Brenda will be remembered for her warm smile, laughter, quick sense of humor, and unwavering love for her family. Though her later years were marked by profound loss and deep sorrow following the deaths of her son Grant and grandson Tyler, she carried their memories with enduring love every day.
Today, we find comfort in knowing that Brenda's earthly struggles have ended. She has been reunited with those she loved, and she now rests peacefully in the loving arms of her Savior. Her legacy of love, resilience, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held 12 PM, Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Taul Funeral Home Chapel with Brandon Gilvin officiating, burial following at Machpelah Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11 AM-12 PM, August 11, 2026 at Taul Funeral Home Chapel.
