Gary Lee
Egelston
Mar 13, 1948 — Oct 21, 2025
Gary Lee Egelston, 77, of Frenchburg, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Gary was born in Dayton, Ohio on March 13, 1948. Raised in Frenchburg, Gary was the son of the late Chester "Peanut" and Mary Egelston. A proud lifelong resident of his hometown, Gary grew up with a deep love for his community and a strong sense of duty to others. It was in Frenchburg that he met the love of his life, Joanne, with whom he shared a beautiful life built on faith, family, and devotion.
Gary answered the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. After completing his service, he returned home to Frenchburg to begin the next chapter of his life—raising a family with his precious Joanne and continuing to serve those around him.
A man of unwavering faith, Gary was a dedicated member of Fellowship Christian Assembly, where he lived out his belief in serving others with kindness and humility. His servant's heart extended into his community through his many years with the Menifee County Volunteer Fire Department, where he proudly served as Fire Chief. Whether responding to a call or lending a helping hand to a neighbor, Gary could always be counted on—often arriving with a smile and a word of encouragement.
Gary was known by many titles—father, brother, uncle, friend—but perhaps his favorite was "Popie." He cherished his family above all else and loved spending time cheering on his beloved Cincinnati Reds and Bengals alongside them. In his spare time, Gary loved spending peaceful days fishing, working with his hands in the woodshop, and relaxing with his loyal dog, Oliver. His laughter, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gary's legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Gary is survived by his loving daughter, Marybeth Thomas (Brad) of Mt. Sterling, KY; his two cherished grandsons, Tyler Thomas (Andrea) and Ryan Thomas (Madison); and his dear brother, Paul Egelston (Karen) of Frenchburg, Kentucky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Joanne Combs Egelston.
