Obituary

James Brown Grier was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to James Brown Grier, Jr. and Elizabeth Ford Grier.

A lifelong scholar, he pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina and Duke University before earning his first Ph.D. from the University of Louisville. He went on to serve as a professor of mathematical psychology at Northern Illinois University for more than twenty years, where he devoted himself to teaching and mentoring students.

Midway through his academic career, he embraced a new challenge and returned to school to pursue a second doctorate. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning and intellectual curiosity. He later concluded his professional career at Lexmark in Lexington, Kentucky.

In March 1963, he married Margaret Ridge. Together they shared a deep love of education and spent many years advancing both their own knowledge and the education of others through their work as professors and academic leaders. They also cherished traveling the world together and spending time with family.

He was the father of James Brown "Jamie" Grier IV (deceased) and Donna Grier Payne (partner, Brian Tyler) of Lexington, Kentucky. He was the proud grandfather of Benjamin Payne and Amanda Payne, both of Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, his beloved wife Margaret, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He valued quiet time, thoughtful conversation in small groups, and the many adventures he shared traveling with his wife and family. He will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, and dedication to education.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
