Dr. Robert Clayton ("Bob") Haynes, Sr., passed away peacefully and in the presence of family at the age of 92 on April 10, 2021 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Bob was born on June 29, 1928 in McRoberts, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Francis Marion Haynes and Rosa Wright Haynes. He served in the United States Army from June 1946-October 1951 where he attained the rank of sergeant. A graduate of Transylvania University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he received Master's degrees from the George Peabody College for Teachers (now a division of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tennessee, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned a Doctoral Degree and the title Dr. Haynes, as he was known for most of his career, from the George Peabody College for Teachers.
Bob was a world traveler and outstanding educator, whose career reflected his life-long devotion to life-long learning for those he served. Bob's long career in education included positions as the Dean of Men at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he was also a professor in the University's Science Department; the first Director of the Mathematics and Science Center for the Richmond, Virginia Public Schools ( one of the first learning centers of its type in the United States); Assistant Superintendent of the Roanoke City School System in Roanoke, Virginia; Superintendent of the Fredericksburg City School System in Fredericksburg, Virginia; Superintendent of the Henry County School System, Kentucky; and Superintendent of the Montgomery County School System, Kentucky.
Bob was active in the communities he served. He was selected as a Governor of the Kentucky Chapter of Rotary Club International; served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; and was selected as Man of the Century of Montgomery County, Kentucky.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delores Evelyn Haynes, his brother, Malcolm D. Haynes and his granddaughter, Rebekah Susan Haynes. He is survived by his children, Robert Clayton Haynes, Jr. (Debby), and Susan Frances Haynes; his sister, Frances M. Hileman ("Bob"); his grandchildren, Clayton Todd Haynes, William Kendall Bache III, and Courtney Leigh Hoeppner (Kirk); and his great-grandchildren, Samantha Downing, Ryan Downing and William Kirk Hoeppner.
A memorial service will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 considerations.
