Ronald Clay Wilson, 71, of Mt. Sterling passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Hosparus Health Inpatient Care Center in Louisville, KY. He was born October 30, 1948 to Lucille Bohanan Wilson and the late Harold Turner Wilson. He was a member of Somerset Christian Church where he served as an elder. Ronnie was honored to fill in for the minister on occasion as well as officiate funerals for close friends. He was an Army Veteran and also a member of American Legion Post 22.
Ronnie was a graduate of Bourbon County High School and Eastern Kentucky University where he majored in Spanish and English. His first job after graduation was teaching Spanish at Madisonville North Hopkins High School, but his tenure there was cut short, because he received his draft papers about a month after his teaching career began. So, he quickly came home and enlisted in the army for four years as a linguist. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson, SC and was then sent to the prestigious Presidio of Monterey. The Presidio is the home of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. After graduating from the Presidio, he received his orders to report to Fort Bragg, NC where he was assigned to the Army Security Agency which was part of the 18th Airborne Corp. He worked as an MP until the last six months of his duty when he entered Project Transition and was trained to be a postal worker. Three months after his discharge, Ronnie began working for the United States Postal Service on Nandino Blvd. in Lexington. He completed his 37 year career in December 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Jones Wilson of Mt. Sterling, KY; two daughters, Kellie Rose Wilson of Lexington, KY and Katie Lucille Picklesimer (Elby) of Paintsville, KY; two brothers, Eddie Wilson (Teresa) of Mt. Sterling, KY and Joe Wilson of Mt. Sterling, KY; brother-in-law, Johnny Jones (Nancy) of Louisville, KY; two nieces, Nora Reffitt (Matt) and Kelsey Jones; two nephews, Tom Wilson and Kiley Jones (Brittany) ; two great-nieces, Kayla Dillon (Dakota) and Autumn Caudill; one great-nephew, Rece Jones; two great-great-nieces and one great-great-nephew.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Nancy Wilson.
Funeral service will be held at 1 PM, Friday, August 14, 2020 at Taul Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Wagoner officiating and burial following at Machpelah Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11-1 PM, Friday, August 14, 2020 at Taul Funeral Home Chapel. Pallbearers will be Eddie Wilson, Joe Wilson, Tom Wilson, Dakota Dillon, Johnny Jones, Kiley Jones, Elby Picklesimer and Chris Dietz. Honorary Pallbearers will be Somerset Christian Church Elders, Dr. Mike Burton, Leigh Anne Hiatt, and Willie Hiatt. Donations may be made to Somerset Christian Church, 3172 Maysville Road, Mt. Sterling, KY 40353.
