Sybil Descheemaeker, 86, of Springfield, VA passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023 at her residence.  She was born September 8, 1937 in Mt. Sterling, KY to the late John Charles and Volney Bernice Nickell Schafer.  She retired from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. as an Analysist.

She is survived by a son, Kurt Descheemaeker of Arlington, VA; and brothers, Steve Schafer (Kay) of Morehead, KY and Sam Schafer of London, KY.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father James Kinney officiating, burial following at St. Thomas Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be John Wenz, John Mahler, Andy Baker, Charles Comer, David Dooley and Rich Ortiz.  In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
